Newborn photos at home, or outdoors?
When it comes to capturing those first precious weeks with your newborn, one of the biggest questions is where the session should take place. Do we keep it cozy and slow at home, or head outdoors to soak up fresh air and beautiful landscapes? Both settings offer something special, and the decision really comes down to what feels most like you.
A slow morning at home
There is something truly magical about photographing families in their own space. Home is where your story is unfolding every day, from cuddles on the couch to quiet feeds in the nursery, from siblings climbing into bed to those first sleepy stretches in your arms. These are the everyday rhythms that deserve to be remembered.
At home sessions are cozy, relaxed, and natural. You do not need a perfectly styled Pinterest house to make it work. The beauty lies in the authenticity, the little details like the way light falls through your window, the nursery chair that rocks your baby to sleep, or the kitchen bench where siblings sneak in for morning snacks. These are the moments and places you will look back on and treasure.
The only space we require for in home newborn sessions, is a window, and a bed or couch/chair. So much magic can be created from just this.
The beauty of the outdoors
Outdoor newborn sessions bring a different kind of magic. If you have a special place that feels meaningful, such as a beach where you walk as a family, a field that glows golden in the afternoon sun, or a beautiful Tasmanian landscape that speaks to you, outdoors can be the perfect choice.
Outdoor sessions are fresh, light filled, and timeless. Think of soft tones in an open field, warm golden light on the coast, or lush greenery that brings vibrancy to your images. These photos also work beautifully as prints in your home, offering a natural backdrop that blends seamlessly with your style.
Outdoor shoots can also be a great option if you are in the middle of moving, renovating, or if your home does not feel like the right backdrop right now. Stepping outside into nature gives us space to play, breathe, and create a gallery filled with energy and connection.
Which is right for you?
There is no better choice, only the one that feels most comfortable and authentic to your family. Some parents love the intimacy of home, while others feel more alive outdoors. Both will tell your story beautifully, and both will give you a gallery of memories layered with love, truth, and connection.
What matters most is capturing this fleeting season in a way that reflects your family. Whether we are curled up on your couch with morning coffee in hand, or walking barefoot through the sand as the sun dips low, my goal is always the same: to create images worthy of your family archives.
So, newborn photos at home or outdoors? Let us choose the setting that feels right for you, and together we will capture memories you will treasure forever.
